THE campaign to end the “Great Lamb Robbery” will be the subject of the NFU’s next meeting for North Riding and Durham farmers on Thursday (April 4).

Extreme weather, cheap imports suppressing the market and the impact of diseases such as the Schmallenberg virus have all combined this year to drive down lamb prices.

The resulting gulf between farm and retail prices has left many sheep farmers facing very low returns at a time when animals are needing much more support than normal because of severe weather and lack of spring grass.

The meeting will hear from Steve Dunkley, of the English Beef and Lamb Executive , on how this year’s problems can be avoided in the future, focusing on global economic trends, price volatility and the outlook for feed prices.

The meeting is open to all NFU members and will be held at the Croft Hotel, Croft On Tees, Darlington, from 7.30pm.
