DETECTIVES are appealing for information after what is thought to be the second armed robbery within a few days carried out by the same man, at the same store in Darlington.

Last Wednesday a man carrying a knife entered the Ken Warne shop in Cleveland Terrace.

He brandished the weapon at the cashier and demanded money from the till. The shaken member of staff handed over around £175 and the man left the shop with the cash and went out of sight.

He was described as aged in his late teens to early twenties, and was of medium build, between 5ft 7in and 5ft 11in tall. He was wearing a blue hooded top and a light coloured woollen hat.

On Sunday night, at around 9.50pm, the store was targeted again by the same man. Wearing similar clothing although minus the woolly hat, the robber again threatened staff with a knife before making off with around £100 cash and a small quantity of cigarettes.

This time he was wearing pink or orange gloves and on the CCTV images from the store police could see his blue jeans had a distinctive pattern which appeared to start from the rear left pocket.

Det Sgt Jim Cunningham said: "The two members of staff were left very badly shaken by this incident. It's vital we catch this man as soon as possible before someone gets badly hurt."

Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the man in the area before or after either incident to contact the Darlington Serious Crime Team on 101 or Crimestoppers, 0800 555111.
