A CASTLE that housed the Bishops of Durham for centuries reopened to the public today (Monday, April 1) following a range of improvements.

Hundreds flocked to Auckland Castle at Bishop Auckland, County Durham, to see the changes that have been made to the historic building since its long-awaited sale to multi-millionaire philanthropist Jonathan Ruffer last year.

Today, for the first time, visitors were able to tuck into homemade cakes and other treats in a new tea room.

And the installation of an improved lighting system meant visitors could see the castle’s famous Zurburan paintings in all their glory.

In addition, a new guide book, enhanced tours and a children’s trail created a more interactive experience.

Manager Rebecca Coates said the team were delighted at the turn out.

“I felt quite emotional when I opened the doors and saw all the people walking up the driveway,” she said. “It was exactly what we had hoped for.”

Admission to Auckland Castle is £8 for adults, £6 for concessions, £4 for children and £20 for a family ticket.

Throughout April, it will be open on Sundays and Mondays from 11am to 4pm and from May 1, the castle will open every day except Tuesdays between 10.30am and 4pm.
