MULTI-million pound plans to help defend a community against coastal flooding will be discussed by Redcar and Cleveland councillors next week.

The Environment Agency is planning on building £2m of sea defences at Skinningrove to help protect residents' homes from destruction.

On Tuesday (MARCH 26) Redcar & Cleveland Council's cabinet will discuss a £200,000 contribution towards the planned coastal scheme.

Helen McLuckie, cabinet member for highways, planning and transport, said: "Residents have lived with the fear of coastal flooding and this development will bring huge relief to the area.

Detailed design works will now be carried out in conjunction with engineering consultants before approval by the Environment Agency.

A consultation exercise will follow including a number of public meetings with key partners and stakeholders in the area.

Following final approval, work is expected to start on the scheme next year.
