THE governors of an independent preparatory school have confirmed that it will close at the end of the academic year.

Consultation on the future of Yarm at Raventhorpe School, in Darlington, began in January after pupil numbers fell to unsustainable levels.

The Board of Governors at Raventhorpe said it had been a “difficult decision” after a thorough consideration of all available options.

One parent, who asked not to be named, said the final confirmation of closure had been "inevitable".

"We were resigned to the fact from the first meeting. They did not give us a chance to come up with any alternative ideas, it was a done deal,” she said.

"No-one had an opportunity to come up with any other solutions to avoid closure.”

The parent added that since the proposed closure announcement in January, a number of children had been removed from the school, making it even less viable.

At the start of the school year Yarm at Raventhorpe had 80 pupils aged from three to 11, with 18 teachers and support staff.

More than half of the pupils will take up a place at Yarm Preparatory School, with free transport for pupils in year two and above.

Yarm School took over the former Raventhorpe Prep School in 2006 after it ran into financial difficulties.

Yarm headmaster David Dunn said: “I am of course saddened that Raventhorpe has to close, however I am pleased that a majority of parents have decided to send their children to Yarm School.

“We can confirm that the school will operate as normal until we break up in July.

“We wish all the pupils well as they leave the school in July and thank their parents for their loyal support. We also pay tribute to the excellent staff.”
