DURHAM Cathedral will be lit up by candles during a special service this weekend (Saturday, February 2).
The Candlemas service marks the end of the 40-day celebration of Jesus’ birth through the blessing and lighting of candles, which symbolise the infant Christ’s presentation at the Jewish temple.
A special Sung Eucharist for Candlemas will be celebrated in the Cathedral on Saturday (February 2) at 5.15pm, with the lighting of 2,000 candles.
The service will be sung by the Cathedral Consort of Singers, a volunteer adult choir including talented local singers and Durham University music students. The preacher is Canon Rosalind Brown.
