A DATE has been set for inquests into the deaths of a taxi driver and three members of his family he shot and killed.

Michael Atherton, 42, shot his partner Susan McGoldrick, 47, her sister Alison Turnbull, 44, and Alison's daughter Tanya Turnbull, 24, before taking his own life on New Year's Day 2012 at his home in Horden, Peterlee, County Durham.

A hearing lasting up to two weeks will begin at the Coroner's Office, Crook, County Durham, on March 4.

Atherton legally owned six weapons, including three shotguns. That was despite him having a history of domestic abuse and having previously made a threat to harm himself.

Bobby Turnbull, whose mother and sister were murdered in the shooting, has lobbied the Home Office to tighten the rules on gun licensing.

He wanted the public to back his e-petition, which calls for people with criminal convictions, a history of domestic violence, mental instability, alcohol or drug problems to be barred from firearm ownership.

He called for a marker to appear on gun owners medical records, which can be shared between police, licensing authorities and health professionals.

He also wants gun owners to explain their need for multiple weapons when applying for a licence.
