WALKERS are being urged to help in the search for a missing North Yorkshire woman with Alzheimer’s who may be lost and unable to find her way home.

Barbara Colling, 68, from Helmsley, has not been seen since 9.35am on Monday in the area of the B1257 at Abbotts Hag, near the Rievaulx turn off, from Helmsley towards Stokesley.

She is described as white, 5ft 6ins tall with a medium build and medium length blonde hair.

When she was last seen she wearing a navy blue jacket, blue trousers, a black woollen hat with ear flaps and black boots and is thought to have been carrying a black rucksack.

It is believed she set off on a walk in the morning but because often gets confused because of her condition and could have got lost.

Her family and police are growing increasingly concerned for her, and she does money or bank cards with her.

Mrs Colling is a retired primary school teacher who has worked at Marton Manor Primary School in Middlesbrough.

Former pupil Rebecca Hillam said: “She taught me twenty years ago when I was six and still remember her as a smiley, bubbly character and all round lovely lady.

“I hope she's back home safe soon.”

Inspector Steve Ratcliffe said: “I am urging anyone who may be out and about, including walkers and people working in the area between Helmsley and Stokesley to keep a look out for Barbara.

“I am also asking farmers to check in outbuildings and sheds to see if she has taken shelter from the poor weather.

“If anyone sees a woman matching Barbara's description, I urge to them to contact the police straight away.”
