ALLEGATIONS that football stewards were too heavy handed during an FA Cup match at the weekend have been made on the internet.

The trouble involved a fan being ejected during Middlesbrough FC’s victory of Aldershot on Saturday.

According to some reports there was pushing and shoving between stewards and the club’s younger, most vocal fans when the stewards went to arrest the supporter.

Middlesbrough Football Club’s safety officer is compiling a report of what happened. It has not been made clear why the stewards wanted to eject the fan.

There were 208 comments On the Fly Me to the Moon fans forum website, including some alleging violence.

One, from Shaun86, said: “It was obvious that the stewards went in really heavy handed.” Another comment said: “This was absolutely crazy by the stewards. There was hardly anything going on and they do this.”

However a spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said they were not aware of any complaint having been made.

Sue Gardener of Middlesbrough Official Supporters Club also said the organisation had not received any complaints about stewarding at the Riverside Stadium.

A spokesman for Middlesbrough Football Club said: “Unfortunately it was necessary to eject a supporter from the South-East Corner of the stadium for his own safety after he failed to heed repeated warnings from our stewards.

"Our Safety Officer is compiling a full report of proceedings that will include a detailed analysis of CCTV footage.”
