DURHAM Cathedral’s Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols service is to be broadcast live.

The Christmas Eve 3pm service is to be broadcast on digital radio and over the Internet by national station Premier Christian Radio.

The traditional service begins with a solo chorister singing the first verse of the carol Once In Royal David’s City.

It will include a Bible reading by the Right Reverend Justin Welby, the Bishop of Durham and next Archbishop of Canterbury.

The Very Reverend Michael Sadgrove, the Dean of Durham, said: “We are delighted that Premier Christian Radio asked to broadcast live from Durham in this way.

“Advent and Christmas is always a special time at Durham with music and our Cathedral choir central to how we celebrate this great Christian festival.

“To enable anyone from around the world to join with us via digital radio or Internet is a wonderful opportunity to share the Christmas message.”
