A TEENAGE girl who was knocked down by a car on her way to school is improving in hospital.

The 13-year-old was struck by a Vauxhall Corsa as she tried to cross a road in Bearpark on the outskirts of Durham City on Tuesday morning.

The accident happened near the Aged Miners’ Homes on Woodland Road at around 7.50am.

The schoolgirl was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with serious head injuries.

Police said her condition is now being described as "poorly, but stable".

The driver of the car, a 36-year-old woman from Ushaw Moor, was shocked but unhurt in the incident.
