UNIVERSITY students have given youngsters a taste of Victorian festive dancing.

Second years on the performing arts course at Sunderland University have performed a dance based on Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at the Masonic Hall in County Durham’s Beamish Museum.

The dance has three different parts that represent the spirits who visit Ebenezer Scrooge – the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future.

The 15 students wore Victorian costume watched by school groups from around the area.

The aim of the performance was to tell a Victorian story in the costume of the time with authentic dancing from the period.

Performing arts lecturer Sarah Riach said: “With it being near to Christmas a festive production and choreographing it with traditional dances worked perfectly.

“Beamish Masonic Hall was the ideal place for the students to perform with their costumes helping all the messages from the dances being portrayed.

“It’s always beneficial for the students to go out and perform in front of a live audience.”
