POLICE are warning that high tides, strong winds and flooding could hit coastal areas tonight, (Friday December 14).

Northumbria Police has received warnings from the Environment Agency about problems expected in the next few areas.

It says the seafront at Roker, Sunderland, the Tyne Estuary at North and South Shields. and the seafronts at Whitley Bay, Cullercoats and Tynemouth will be affected.

A force spokesman said: “We have extra officers in these areas monitoring the situation and out on patrol. “Officers are advising residents in the affected areas to be prepared as best they can for the weather and to monitor local media and agency websites for up- to- date news and information.

“Motorists are being advised to take care on roads; drive safely and watch out for standing water.

“Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time, use their lights appropriately and drive according to the conditions.

“Drivers are urged not to take risks and drive through areas that have been flooded. “
