THE largest working model of the Stockton and Darlington Railway’s Locomotion is to go on show in the North-East.
The model of George Stephenson’s historic steam engine is thought to be at least 150-years-old.
Staff at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon bought the 15ins gauge model from The Iron Horse pub, in Newton Aycliffe, earlier this year.
It is believed to have been made at either Shildon or Darlington railway works in 1875 by apprentices for the 50th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway’s opening.
The model, which it is thought was once capable of running under steam, is on show at the museum for the foreseeable future.
Museum staff are researching the history of the model and are keen for anyone who can help to get in touch via email on locomotion@nrm.org.uk
Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon is open between 10am and 4pm daily. Admission is free.
