PENSIONERS have returned to school for a day of Christmas dinners and bingo put on by pupils.

Students at Parkside Sports College, in Willington, hosted the event for 65 elderly people with a view to breaking down the age barrier.

The students from the school’s XL group served dinner to the visitors before hosting games including bingo in the school hall.

Each visitor also got a Christmas food hamper with the ingredients donated by students, staff and Age UK.

The day received £300 worth of funding from the three Towns Area Action Partnership and Donna Heslop, director of partnerships for Parkside, said it had been a big success.

She said: “This day has been all about bringing people from different generations together for fun and festivities.

“This is the third year we have done this and as always everyone has enjoyed themselves.

“It is really good for us to give something back to the community.”

Local businesses donated prizes for the bingo and Willington mayor Brian Myers and his wife Alice also attended for dinner.
