SUNDERLAND’S greatest football matches of the modern era are revisited in a new book which traces the club’s history from being FA Cup holders, through dropping into English football’s third tier for the first time in its history, and on to the present day. Day’s 250-page book, which carries many match photos, follows earlier volumes covering 1879 to 1939 and 1940 to 1973.
“The Finest Matches series has taken us on a red and white ride looking at Sunderland AFC from before its entry into the league to the present day,” he says. “With all three books combined, we have chronicled within the fixture lists every match home and away, competitive or otherwise that the first team has ever played; the first time this has ever been accomplished. The three volumes total more than 700 pages, without doubt one of the largest series of books ever devoted to any one club.”
