THE Summer Stage Experience, in which a bunch of teenagers under professional guidance put on a big musical in two weeks, goes from strength to strength under directorchoreographer Louise Denison.

Guys And Dolls is a big challenge, both musically and dramatically, but one that the youthful cast pull off with talent and enthusiasm Happily, at the interval someone turned down the volume, putting an end to an overloud sound system that distorted the singing. It was the only glitch in a smooth and well-played production.

Guys And Dolls has a score stuffed with familiar songs (Luck be a Lady, Sit Down You’re Rocking The Boat, and Bushel and a Peck) and a plot involving gambling, girlfriends and religion. The latter is represented mainly by Sarah Brown, the Sally Army girl out to reform the sinners and gamblers of New York.

George Stagnell has real stage presence as Sky Masterson, the cool and calculating gambler who whisks Sarah (Megan Simpson) off to Havana for a wild night of partying to win a bet.

Robyn Grant is everything you could want from Miss Adelaide, the Hot Box singer with the squeaky voice and a 14-year engagement to hustler Nathan Detroit (Callum Watt, increasingly desperate to find a location for his illegal craps game).

Matthew Hill’s Nicely-Nicely Johnson is nicely, nicely done, aided by Reece McMahon and Daniel Williams as his gambling companions. Little Jake Abbott makes a suitably big impression as Big Jule.

The chorus and dancers all get their moment in the spotlight too, coming together to superb effect in the dynamic Luck Be A Lady number.
