CD REVIEWS
Arnie Somogyi's Ambulance/Accident and Insurgency (Linn AKD306)
One of the most enjoyable and stimulating concerts I attended last year was the performance by Ambulance at the Caedmon Hall, Gateshead. It's a strong line up with Paul Booth and Rob Townsend on reeds, Tim Lapthorn piano, Arnie on bass and Dave Smith drums plus American trumpeter Eddie Henderson, not just a guest soloist but a vital member of the ensemble. It's a really integrated and lively band and this clearly recorded CD, made on the same tour, captures it perfectly.
Eliane Elias/Something for You (Blue Note 11795)
This is a most effective and beautifully played tribute to the late Bill Evans by pianist and vocalist Eliane Elias. She is accompanied by the always tasteful Joey Barton and by husband, Marc Johnson, who was not only Evans' last bass player but, I think, one of his best. As well as familiar songs from the Evans' repertoire there are two of his "works in progress", never recorded before, to make this a very special album.
