The Last Tango, Vincent Simone and Flavia Cacace: Newcastle Theatre Royal

NOW that Strictly Come Dancing is with us once again, I for one still miss seeing Vincent and Flavia each week in the run-up to Christmas. So how fantastic that their third and final stage show is back in town to remind us of their brilliance.

The show is a non-stop dance extravaganza with Vincent and Flavia very definitely centre-stage from start to finish. Not only do we see much of their celebrated Argentine Tango, but being Ten Dance champions, we also get to see pretty much every other dance style you can think of. Supported by an eight-strong, vibrant and energetic dance troupe, one musical number blends seamlessly into the next, with stand-out standards such as Magic Moments, Autumn Leaves, Moondance and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.

Both Vincent and Flavia now seem comfortable and confident projecting their personalities into the far corners of the auditorium, which is after all, a very different setting for them than their ballroom comfort zone, so it is a pity that they are proclaiming this to be their last production. What’s next? Giant arena productions instead? We’ll have to wait and see.

Meanwhile, fans should grab a chance to see them in this poignant and engaging show which recalls the love affair and married life of a couple through their dance memories. There was not a dry eye in the house towards the close of the second act, such was the emotion created.

Great singing, gorgeous dresses and costumes, and fantastic technique. In the words of a certain judge, it was Absolutely Fabulous.
