REVIEWS: Haydn Piano Sonatas Marc-Andre Hamelin (Hyperion CDA67554) - This sterling recording sees the enthusiastic composer and master pianist Marc-Andre Hamelin taking on the work of enthusiastic pianist and master composer Haydn.
The recordings take the listener on a tour through Haydn's experimental and popularist styles, and includes two of his most recognised sonatas, 50 and 52. At two discs for the price of one, this a real bargain.
Brahms: Viola Sonatas Trio in A minor (Hyperion CDA67584)
Brahms' most important contribution to the viola repertoire were originally conceived for the clarinet. The viola's distinctive timbre conveys the sense of intimacy of these beautiful chamber works with telling effect. Violist Lawrence Power is joined by cellist Tim Hugh and pianist Simon Crawford-Phillips in these expressive works.
Frederick Delius: Songs (Hyperion CDA67594) Delius' composed over 62 songs, over half of which are of a Scandinavian flavour - inspired by his long-standing friendship with Edward Grieg. This wide ranging recital embraces the full gamut of his passion.
