A contemporary of fellow countryman Carl Nielsen, the composer Louis Glass came to begrudge Nielson’s reputation overshadowing his. Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie, conducted by Daniel Raskin, redresses the neglect of Glass’s works with a series surveying his symphonies. The first volume features a warm-hearted Symphony No 3 “Forest” and the five-movement Sommerliv (Summer Life). Pleasing listening.

The French composer Gounod may be best known for his Ave Marie and opera Faust, but he also turn out two completed symphonies; given a welcome outing by the Svizzera Italiana Orchestra, under the baton of Oleg Caetani. These are charming works with an energetic drive. The album is rounded off with a premier recording of a symphonic fragment in C major.
