REVIEWS: Brahms: Complete Music for Cello and Piano (Avie AV2300) Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra principal cellist Jonathan Aasgaard is joined by pianist Martin Roscoe in a 2-CD set of complete works for cello and piano by Brahms. This highly-desirable album includes the composer’s sonatas, as well as arrangements of the popular Hungarian Dances, a selection of Lieder and the First Violin Sonata. Superb renditions that come highly recommended.

Ysaye: Sonatas for Solo Violin, Karl Stobbe (Avie AV2310) Ysaye’s Solo Violin Sonatas take the instrument to the limit of its capabilities in a unique way. Violinist Karl Stobbe plays with energy and drive and meticulous care to detail, while maintaining a cogent narrative flow throughout. An ideal introduction to these works.

Brahms, Roza: Clarinet Sonatas (Avie AV2311) Husband-and-wife performers, clarinettist Jean Johnson and pianist Steven Osborne, join forces for a scintillating recording of Brahms’ popular Clarinet Sonatas – the last chamber works he wrote.

The works are paired with rarer sonatas for clarinet by Miklos Rozsa, with the spotlight falling solely on Johnson.
