CD REVIEWS: Bill Perkins/Four Classic Albums (Avid AMSC1121) Perkins is one of my favourite tenor saxophonists, influenced by Lester Young but with an individual voice at its peak in these 1950s sessions. On The Tenors Head On he’s teamed with Richie Kamuca, and Al Cohn is added on The Brothers! The Five features Conte Candoli and On Stage includes Bud Shank and Carl Fontana. Perkins swings all the way through a crammed 2CD set. avidgroup.co.uk

Billy Hart Quartet/One is the Other (ECM 375 9733) This second ECM album by the drummer’s quartet shows what can be achieved by a group of accomplished musicians who listen carefully to each other. Tenor player Mark Turner, pianist Ethan Iverson, double bass player Ben Street and Hart gel perfectly with their varied compositions tempered with just one standard, a gentle version of Some Enchanted Evening.

Colin Vallon Trio/Le Vent (ECM 376 2782) This, too, is a second ECM issue for Swiss pianist Vallon, supported by bass player Patrice Moret and new drummer Julian Sartorius. It’s exquisitely sensitive with all three musicians exploring the beauty of sound. Each hearing brings something new, from a delicately falling note to an awareness of a subtly developing rhythm. ecmrecords.com
