AUDIENCES at Newcastle Theatre Royal are going back to the Swinging Sixties as Rambert returns with Rooster – Christopher Bruce’s celebration of the era set to music by the Rolling Stones.

This popular piece of rock’n’roll swagger will be accompanied by two new pieces – a bold new work of dance theatre and an eyepopping display of technical prowess.

In Rooster sharp-suited, snake-hipped men and strong, sassy women perform virtuoso courtship dances to some of the Stones’ most famous tunes, including Not Fade Away, Paint It Black, As Tears Go By, Sympathy for the Devil and Little Red Rooster.

Rooster was created by former Rambert artistic director Bruce in 1991, and these performances represent its highly anticipated return to the UK stage after 13 years.

Barak Marshall’s The Castaways is a new dance work telling the story of the trials and triumphs of 12 lost souls thrown together. Set and costume design are by Jon Bausor, who designed the London 2012 Paralympics opening ceremony.

Ashley Page, former artistic director of Scottish Ballet, returns to Rambert with Subterrain, a work for five couples combining sensual, sinewy movement with atmospheric music by Aphex Twin and award-winning composer Mark-Anthony Turnage.

Designer and long-time collaborator with Page, Jon Morrell, was awarded best costume design at the Olivier Awards 2013 for the West End production of Top Hat, which visits Newcastle Theatre Royal this autumn.

  • Rambert appears at Newcastle Theatre Royal from tonight until Thursday.
