The strange, the weird and the wonderful have always exercised a powerful influence over the human psyche, and even in a scientific age, there is a preoccupation with the soul, the supernatural and magic.
Indeed, increasing materialism seems to have inspired an increasing interest in all things spiritual, from druidic ceremonies to psychic phenomena and even Satanism and black magic.
Warner's approach to the whole subject takes in theology, metaphysics, art, literature and film and is heavy going at times, and it is odd that in a work of this nature that she does not make her own position clear. Perhaps she is just keeping her fingers crossed?
