ALMOST 1,000 farmers are expected to attend the annual conference of the National Farmers' Union (NFU) - the centrepiece of its centenary year.

Speakers include Hilary Benn, Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs; David Cameron, Conservative Party leader; and Sir Terry Leahy, chief executive of Tesco.

Also addressing the conference will be Sir Stuart Rose, chief executive of Marks & Spencer; Iain Ferguson, chief executive of Tate & Lyle; Professor John Beddington, the new chief science officer; and Malcolm Wicks, Minister of State for Energy.

Professor Robert Thompson, of the University of Illinois, and Bob Stallman, of the American Farm Bureau Federation, will be joined by Jonathon Porritt, director of Forum for the Future.

Peter Kendall, NFU president, will open the twoday conference at the Hilton London Metropole Hotel, on Monday, February 18.
