THE Northern Echo has now launched its Best Chippy 2024 competition – and your favourite chippy needs your support!

Every day, we will be featuring one of our ten finalists, today being the turn of Yarm Road Fish and Chips, at 366 Yarm Road, Darlington.

Run by Will Burrell for the last seven years, who is no stranger to the fish and chip industry having grown up with chippy-owning parents.

He said: "I've had the fish and chip shop in Yarm Road for seven years now, after spotting it as a former Carphone Warehouse shop.

"I thought the location was good and decided to go for it."

"My parents ran a fish and chip shop for about 15 years, so me and my sister grew up there and got our experience."

Will, who now has a team of 11 staff, had a good start to the business before Covid forced him to close.

He said: "We did close at first because we wanted to keep everyone safe. We closed for seven weeks, which was tough, but we re-opened and there were queues around the block every day."

Will said his priority has always been to source the best ingredients.

He said: "We buy the best Icelandic fish in nice big fillets that flakes beautifully.

"We've got a great relationship with our suppliers, particularly for our fish and potatoes. Consistency is key - we have to know the quality will always be there.

"We are passionate about what we do – and when you love your job, it isn't a job."
