AN online tool that will help construction companies reduce their carbon footprint has been launched by the Environment Agency.
The spreadsheet-based tool, which from next month will be mandatory during the planning stage on major Environment Agency construction projects, is being made available to construction companies, government bodies and consultants.
Andrew Powell, technical advisor at the Environment Agency, said: "We are always looking to ways of reducing the environmental impact from our construction projects.
"We spend about £200m a year on construction projects - that is three per cent of the construction civil engineering sector."
The tool includes ways of:
* Estimating carbon dioxide in raw materials;
* Assessing emissions from travel by employees and transportation of materials
* Estimating emissions from site activities such as earthworks and excavation.
