Most people are aware and concerned about damage to the environment and want to do something about it, according to a survey.

Only 17 per cent of the 3,600 people surveyed said they felt guilty about taking short-haul flights. They strongly believe that interference with nature may produce disastrous consequences. The majority are concerned about changes to the countryside, the loss of bio-diversity, and about the finite nature of the earth's resources. But there is optimism that it is not too late to do something.

They are the latest findings of the survey, Public Attitudes and Behaviour toward the Environment, by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
