THE firm behind a North-East flagship train building scheme has unveiled plans for a new UK depot.
Hitachi Rail Europe, which will build more than 860 carriages at a factory in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, creating 730 jobs, wants to open a maintenance depot in Landore, Swansea. The plant will include a building and train washing area and fuel pump room.
Earlier this year, Hitachi won a £1.2bn Government contract to build 270 carriages, which follows an initial order for 596 carriages placed last year to bring train building back to the North-East.
The firm's Aycliffe plant will start building trains in 2016, which will enter service on the Great Western Main Line running between Bristol to south Wales.
A year later, its trains will start running on the East Coast Main Line, connecting the North-East to Scotland and London.
