BUSINESSES across the region are being urged to get plugged in to the electric vehicle charging point network by taking advantage of a special 75 per cent subsidy.

The funding, which represents a contribution of about £3,750, is available to firms employing fewer than 250 staff; third sector organisations and green industries.

It has been introduced by Charge your Car, the North Easts Plugged in Places scheme, as part of a bid to install 1000 charging points throughout the North-East by 2013. Businesses that meet certain criteria will be eligible for the revised subsidy, which was previously 50 per cent.

In addition, local authorities will qualify for the 75 per cent offer for new charging posts and those yet to be installed as part of a bid by the government to help them meet their green targets.

To qualify, hosts are required to provide free electricity for electric vehicle charging for three years; provide a free parking space and access to the charging point; as well as agreeing to maintain the equipment for at least five years.
