NORTH-EAST firms and organisations are helping lead the way in seizing the business opportunities offered by mobile phone applications.

Darlington-based inkredible.co.uk, an online ink cartridge company, has launched an Apple iPhone app that allows customers to order cartridges.

INKredible’s managing director, Darren Pegram, said: “We believe we are the first in our sector to offer our customers an iPhone app designed to grow our market share by retaining those customers who we might otherwise lose to a traditional retailer when they need a fast turnaround.”

The application was created for the firm by Newcastle software developer hedgehog lab.

Mark Forster, co-founder of hedgehog lab, said: “Offering customers every available platform on which to place their order makes sound commercial sense for an online business.

“The app has just been listed on the App Store and all indications are that it is set to be very popular.”

Meanwhile, the official NewcastleGateshead City Guide iPhone App has been launched by the NewcastleGateshead Initiative, one of the first to be developed and used by a tourism organisation in the UK.

Sarah Stewart, interim chief executive at the destination marketing organisation, said: “We are very proud to be one of the first UK destinations to fully embrace the possibilities offered by mobile technology.

“We have developed a range of resources to help people get the most out of the destination, including the newly designed website and pocket guide.

“The iPhone App is a welcome addition that can only enhance the overall experience for both visitors and residents alike.”
