GNER has signed a four-year contract with catering supplier Rail Gourmet - and promised higher quality, better value food for passengers.
It carried out a six-month review of its catering business and began a tendering process, inviting bids for the contract from all over Europe.
The deal with Rail Gourmet includes the restaurant, buffet and at-seat trolley service on GNER trains.
GNER said the two partners were committing significant resources to the joint venture and would deliver quality improvements in key areas.
The York-based train company offers 90 restaurant services each weekday on board its trains and serves more than 120,000 cups of tea and coffee every month.
Recent menu choices on GNER trains have included duck confit, baked, stuffed aubergine with tomato and cod fishcakes with mixed pepper salad - a far cry from the days of the old British Rail curled-up sandwich.
Many of its food and drink products are sourced from local suppliers close to its East Coast Main Line rail route.
