THE North-East office of professional services company PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has developed a carbon reduction plan which will help it send zero waste to landfill by 2012.

PwC’s Newcastle office aims to reduce its carbon emissions by 25 per cent, and has introduced a number of initiatives for staff, including reducing travel by using video conferencing, introducing new recycling facilities and using biodegradable products.

In association with the Carbon Trust, PwC has also installed sensory lighting which activates when entering or leaving a room, a more efficient air conditioning system which ensures that the office is only heated and cooled when necessary to do so, and it buys renewable energy whenever possible.

Changes which were made during last year reduced carbon emissions by 16 per cent and the firm is now looking to increase that further this year.

Paul Woolston, senior partner at PwC in Newcastle, said: “Sustainability and carbon reduction are key areas of focus for PwC.

“Our staff should be praised for their efforts in helping the firm make a real difference to the environment.”
