A STUDY is being launched to investigate the role played by the region’s universities in economic development.

The report is being compiled in response to a request by Business Secretary Lord Mandelson, for a report on how the country’s universities, supported by regional development agencies, can drive growth.

Regional development agency One North East has so far surveyed about 90 people and organisations for information, and is appealing to other interested parties to contribute. It is hoped the study can be completed by early next month.

Alan Welby, director of strategy at One North East, said: “In a knowledge-based region, economic growth relies on the interplay between universities, businesses and communities and between social, commercial and academic interests.

“We hope this study will help us to align regional policy to meet the future demands of industry and provide the correct training and support for the jobs that will drive our future economy.”
