A CAMPAIGN for a cut in VAT on property repairs to safeguard construction jobs is making a final push for support.

The Repairing Britain campaign, funded and headed by building firm Rok, is calling on the Government to reduce VAT on property repairs to five per cent.

The campaign organisers are urging people from across the North-East to sign its Downing Street e-petition before its April deadline.

Mitchell Smith, Rok operations director for maintenance and build, said: “Although, officially, the UK is out of recession, the challenges for business sectors like the construction industry are just beginning.

“Lowering VAT on property repairs and maintenance will provide a stimulus to the industry that bring in more work and help firms retain jobs and skills that are in danger of disappearing.”

The epetition is available at petitions.number10.gov.uk/repairingbri tain/ A paper version is available at Rok centres at Preston Farm Business Park, in Stockton, and the Metro Centre, Gateshead.
