THE renovation of a Victorian hospital building has been shortlisted for a regional architecture award.
The building, on the St Nicholas Hospital site, in Gosforth, Newcastle, is one of eight shortlisted from 20 entries for the Best Design in the Community Benefit category of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors North-East Renaissance Awards.
The renovation project cost Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust, England’s biggest NHS mental health and disability trust, about £8m.
The building houses the Greentrees unit, which accommodates up to 14 adults who require intensive psychiatric care, and the Lennox Ward, which cares for up to seven young men with learning disabilities.
The development includes ensuite bedrooms, with a small gym and separate lounge areas for female patients.
