A PLANNING application for a renewable energy site that could bring thousands of jobs to North Tyneside is to be submitted.

US-owned Clipper Windpower is planning to build a factory on the banks of the Tyne in Wallsend, which could create an initial 500 jobs.

The California-based firm then hopes to secure contracts to create offshore North Sea windfarms, leading to up to 4,000 jobs being created.

The site is earmarked for land owned by Shepherd Offshore, and a planning application is expected to be submitted to Newcastle City Council shortly.

The move is part of Shepherd’s plans to create a hub of renewable energy technology on the north banks of the Tyne and comes after the firm – part owned by former Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd – signed a multi-million pound deal to buy up former shipyards.
