A SPECIALIST healthcare provider that began in the North- East 20 years ago has become one of the biggest firms in the sector, with a turnover of £50m and a workforce of 1,000.

Castlebeck has a portfolio of 13 independent hospitals and 27 care homes across the UK, including seven in the North-East.

The company is one of the country's leading providers of specialist healthcare and rehabilitation services for people with learning disabilities.

David Cole, Castlebeck chairman, said: "The development and growth of Castlebeck is undoubtedly one of the region's success stories.

"From just one facility in 1987 to a major national provider just 20 years later, it is a truly remarkable track record.

"The company has built its reputation in a very tough market place."

Castlebeck, based in Darlington's Enterprise House, was started by nurses Brian Stevens and Kevin Davis and Dr Sam Had. They worked at the Aycliffe Hospital, near Sedgefield, County Durham, and wanted to provide essential care services for vulnerable patients with learning difficulties after the hospital closed.

They bought Whorlton Hall, near Barnard Castle, and the firm's portfolio has increased almost every year.

Castlebeck's 40 facilities can care for more than 500 patients and a management team was appointed in 2002.

Mr Cole said: "It's very significant that the company has been able to operate with home-grown managers, many of whom started as nurses and support workers, who through their dedication have gone on to gain better qualifications.

"Some of our people have been with the company from the start.

"They have made an invaluable contribution to the way in which the business has developed and blossomed."

Castlebeck will hold a celebration to mark its 20th anniversary on Tuesday at Whorlton Hall.
