A NORTH Yorkshire shop dating back to 1868 has achieved an outstanding win at one of the industry's largest events.

Family-owned Campbell's of Leyburn took home the 'Best Village Store and Local Shop' category at an awards presented at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.

Twenty experts assessed the store, and one mystery shop was conducted, ahead of the final shortlist.

Their win was recognised at the Farm Shop and Deli Awards.

The firm, founded in 19th century, celebrated its 150th milestone last year.

It was first-opened by Robert Campbell, who was head gardener on the Bolton Estate, and his son Alexander, 151-years-ago.

The firm claims it is one of Wensleydale's oldest businesses.

After winning the 'Best Village Store and Local Shop' award, managing director Kath Campbell, said: “Over the years, our store has won Herriot Country and other leading regional Awards, but the Food Shop and Deli Awards are special because they attract retailers from across the United Kingdom.

“We were delighted when we were among the runners up last year and are absolutely thrilled to have gone one better this year and won our category.

"The enthusiastic response on social media to our victory from suppliers and customers has been the icing on the cake.”

The owners said the traditional supermarket has since become its own visitor-attraction over the years.

The award-winning store features a Wine Club, in-store events area, traditional butchery and deli.
