Nestled at the bottom of the market square, York House is an Aladdin’s cave of delights for locals and visitors who venture through the front door.
The mid-18th century building was once a substantial and attractive residence in this quaint Georgian town, but now stands as an Emporium of Wonders spread over three-stories, and spilling out into the garden courtyard at the rear.
The extensive, family-run shop celebrates its 21st birthday this year and offers a myriad of temptations for the home and garden, unusual gifts for those wanting something a bit different, and furnishings to suit every style and taste.
Manager, Denise Heslehurst, says: “Our stock is always changing. We have different things coming in every week, so it’s well worth calling in regularly to see what’s new. We honestly have something for everyone”
“It is easy forget we are here because the shop is tucked away. From the front, it looks smaller than it is. Like the Tardis – once you’re inside there’s a lot more to it. People are genuinely surprised at how big it is.”
The shop is ideal if you’re looking for something a bit different, with a vast selection of vintage and shabby chic furniture, every type of home furnishing, garden artefacts, scarves, glove, purses, bags, jewellery and gifts - and much, much more!
There’s a gallery selling statement sculptures and the work of local artists, and a room with kitchenalia, and old tools for those interested in more practical things.
Both inside and out, every inch of space is used to display the amazing array of unusual and quirky paraphernalia to delight the eye and tempt the purse.
Denise is very excited about the new festive stock. “Our Christmas Room is coming together now,” she says with delight, “and we will be arranging some special Christmas shopping evenings in December with mince pies and a glass of fizz.”
