MORE than 300 jobs are expected to be lost after a meat supplier’s collapse.

Russell Hume has fallen into administration following a food hygiene probe that caused high-profile customers JD Wetherspoon and Jamie’s Italian to end contracts.

The firm, which counted a site in Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire, among its bases, became engulfed in scandal last month after the Food Standards Agency (FSA) launched an investigation over an alleged "serious" breach of food hygiene rules.

Pub group Wetherspoon also pulled sirloin, rump and gammon steak from the menu of its 900 UK and Irish pubs in response to what Russell Hume said was a “mislabelling” issue.

Administrator KPMG says 266 workers will be made redundant, with 36 staff remaining to help wind down the company.

However, it is expected all 302 jobs will be lost in total.

In a statement, directors said the FSA had created "impossible trading conditions" for the business.

They added: “Had the FSA worked more closely with us in the crucial early stages of the situation, then more than 300 jobs may not have been lost.”
