THE Queen's Awards for Enterprise are arguably the biggest awards open to businesses in the UK.

They recognise outstanding achievement and reward companies that have demonstrated excellence.

Organisers are urging companies of all sizes and from all sectors across the North-East and North Yorkshire to consider submitting an entry into any of three categories.

David Moore, secretary to the Prime Minister's advisory committee, said winning an award could raise a company's profile and be a powerful marketing tool.

He said: "It is Britain's most prestigious business award and is recognised overseas as well as in the UK.

"It enhances a company's credibility, can help them win new business and helps open doors when companies are trying to break into new markets. It is also brilliant for the morale of the staff involved."

The awards are presented in three categories:

* International Trade - recognising companies that have demonstrated growth in overseas earnings;

* Innovation - recognising companies that have demonstrated commercial success through innovative products or services;

l Sustainable Development - recognising companies that have integrated environmental, social, economic and management aspects of sustainable development into their business.

Winners in the 2007 Queen's Awards included The Davy Roll Company, of Gateshead, Ecosyl Products, of Stokesley, North Yorkshire, and Bettys and Taylors Group Limited, of Harrogate, also North Yorkshire.

There is also a Queen's Award for Enterprise Promotion, which recognises the activities of individuals who have played a significant role in promoting enterprise skills and attitudes in others.

Entries for next year's Queen's Awards must be submitted by October 31 and winners will be announced in April.
