AN engineering firm in the North-East has saved £15,000 and reduced its carbon footprint thanks to the help of a university graduate.

Carol Mahoney, an environmental geoscience graduate from Bishop Auckland, County Durham, has spent the past three months working with Express Engineering, based in the Team Valley, Gateshead.

Her remit, in consultation with the Carbon Trust, a Government-funded-company that helps businesses to cut carbon emissions, was to drive down waste, reduce energy usage and save the firm money.

Express Engineering is now on course to reduce its carbon dioxide output by more than 250 tonnes a year and save up to £15,000.

Ms Mahoney has made a number of changes and established ways that packaging and waste can be reused or recycled, which has led to a 60 per cent reduction in materials sent to land fill.
