SPECIALIST glass maker Romag yesterday hinted at the further expansion of its County Durham base after recording a 300 per cent rise in sales of its solar product.

The Consett-based company's full-year results showed its PowerGlaz sales had grown to £5.4m from £1.4m last year, and hailed it as an integral part of its £16.4m turnover.

The firm, which is also a leading manufacturer of blast and bullet-proof glass, floated on the AIM in June, raising £2.5m.

Romag is increasing the capacity of its PowerGlaz division - which manufactures glass panels that turn the sun's rays into electricity - from 4MW per year to 12MW over the next 12 months.

Yesterday, as directors predicted further dramatic growth in the sector, it was revealed the Consett site could be earmarked for further development.

A Romag spokesman said: "Depending on where the market is going in the future, there is the potential to expand the Consett site."

As well as entering into alliances with BP and Eton Solar, it was revealed Romag is in negotiations with two more cell manufacturers in an attempt to meet demand for PowerGlaz.

John Kennair, Romag's chairman, said the success of PowerGlaz had been phenomenal.
