Sorry to hear about John. We were good friends in the 1960s at University & afterwards. I remember John as always cheerful, good company and a good friend.

Sorry to hear about John. He was a great bloke, whom I knew when we were studying chemistry, Grey College, Durham University, 1961-65. We both ended up working in Darlington our our friendship was renewed. Had some good trips abroad with him and another guy, including some brill skiing hols. We also enjoyed many a good chat over a pint in the Old Boys Club.
I believe he started his teaching at the Grammar School in Darlington and later moved to Hummersknot , where he taught my sister Susan. They called him "Smiler Hopwood", a very apt soubriquet !
