NEWCASTLE Falcons' preparations for the new season have continued apace, with the news that former South Africa A captain Russell Winter has signed a new one-year deal with the club.

The experienced back rower has made 24 appearances for the Falcons since joining in December 2006, captaining the side on a number of occasions.

Newcastle director of rugby Steve Bates said: "Russell's decision to stay is a massive boost for us, as we continue our planning for the coming season.

"As well as being an abrasive presence and a cool experienced head out on the field, his leadership qualities have also proved outstanding during his time with us.

"In the year-and-a-half he has been with the club, Russell has settled superbly. He is really enjoying being in the North-East and feels passionately about buying in to the culture that we are building here within the squad."

Having put pen to paper on his new deal, Winter added: "I have been honoured to represent the people of Newcastle during my time here so far, and when the chance came up to extend that for another year, my mind was made up straight away.

"I feel privileged to be involved with this group of people, the bond we have with our very loyal supporters, and I just can't wait for the new season to start."
