England’s Dina Asher-Smith denied she is under extra pressure to succeed after powering into the 200m final at the Commonwealth Games.

The 22-year-old easily qualified for Thursday’s 200m shoot-out with the spotlight now on her after a number of high-profile failures by England team-mates on the Gold Coast.

Andy Pozzi, Asha Philip and the Brownlee brothers have all missed out on an individual medal in Australia while Max Whitlock failed to win the pommel horse and Adam Peaty lost his four-year unbeaten run in the pool.

But, after finishing second in her heat, Asher-Smith insisted she is ignoring any outside issues.

“No, I don’t pay attention to what’s happening outside the bubble,” said Asher-Smith, who ran 22.44 seconds in Wednesday’s semi.

“I don’t know what’s been said. We all want each other do well because we’re a team, there’s no individual pressure.

“You want to go and win the semi-final but I’m happy to have put down that time. You can ease off because you can get into a tear-up if you want to, but something in the back of my mind reminded me it was the semi-final.

“You’d love to win a semi but I’ve qualified in a decent time and I didn’t feel too bad doing it.”

Team-mate Bianca Williams joins her in the final but there was no place for Finette Agyapong.

Zharnel Hughes also reached the men’s 200m, winning his semi final in 20.37s, but Richard Kilty missed out, coming fifth in his semi-final in 20.67s.

Hughes, who will meet Northern Ireland’s Leon Reid in the final, said: “My coach and I said once I got out into the home straight to try not to use up too much and make it look easy.

“I’m just looking at my execution, I’m not looking at getting any medals, they will come as long as the execution is right.”

Robbie Grabarz, who won Olympic bronze at London 2012, suffered a disappointing night when he failed to clear 2.21m in the high jump final while Scotland’s Allan Smith came fifth behind Australian winner Brandon Starc.

Jazmin Sawyers (6.47m), Lorraine Ugen (6.42m) and Shara Proctor (6.89m) all qualified for Thursday’s long jump final.

Sawyers, who won silver at Glasgow 2014, said: “Four years ago was special. I think there is definitely more in me.

“I’m hoping there’s much more in the tank. I’m delighted to be in that final and just happy to be back competing at a major championships.”

Dan Bramble finished fifth in the long jump, won by South Africa’s Luvo Manyonga, after leaping 7.94m and England team-mate Rosie Clarke came fourth in the 3,000m steeplechase.

Scotland’s Maria Lyle also took sliver in the T35 100m and Botswana’s Amantle Montsho won the women’s 400m.
