DURHAM & District League

 

                The league season was completed by a very successful Finals Day at Pelton Fell, where Houghton Dairy Lane completed the League and Cup double when they beat Mainsforth in the Final of the Millennium Cup by 40 shots to 36.

                The prestigious Singles Championship was won by Noah Cummings of Nevilles Cross when he beat George Williams of Ever Ready Craghead by 19 shots to 10 in the final. Earlier George had competed in the Final of the Men’s Pairs in which he was joined by Paul Calvert to beat Steve Bennett and Jim Hutchinson of Pelton Fell by 29 shots to 19.

                Bennett and Hutchinson were joined by Pelton Fell team mate, Colin Thompson, in the Final of the Triples in which they beat Steve Brown, John Clarke and Alan Brown of Ever Ready/Craghead by 18 shots to 10. In the Fours Final Nevilles Cross collected their second trophy when Fay Slinn, Brian Slinn, Dennis Christie and Billy Maddison beat Alan Temple, John Thompson, Bob Forster and Tommy Leathers of Sherburn Village by 22 shots to 10. The Mixed Pairs was won by Julie Robinson and Jason Taylor of Leeholme with a 19 shots to 5 victory over Dave Armstrong and Glynis Morgan of Houghton Dairy Lane.

                The League Presentation Evening will be held at Durham Indoor Club on Friday 25th September starting at 7pm. Tickets booked through Club Secretaries

 

Stella Logan Counties League

 

                The Durham County Ladies team travelled to York, where they were beaten by 137 shots to 105. The Durham rinks results were Rink 1: Julie Robinson, Pat Johnson, Sam Pattison and Eileen Horan won 21-17; Rink 2: Gillian Harle, Joyce Woodward, Val Gray and Edna Atkinson won 25-15; Rink 3: Maureen Rockett, Maj Taylor (sub), Dorothy Hudson, Pauline Vincent and Esther Helm lost 8-42; Rink 4: Dawn Jackson, Margaret Riley, Jean Mather and Jenny Collin won 21-20; Rink 5: Jennifer Howey, Ann Anderson, Eveline Barkes and Susan Walker drew 17-17; Rink 6: Jacky Classen, Fay Slinn, Liz Morris and Margaret Metcalf lost 13-26.

                The current league positions (P, W, Shots diff., Pts) are Lancs P6, W5, 191. 51½; Cumbria 6, 5, 48, 147; Durham 7, 3, -8, 35; Yorks 6, 3, 6, 32; Northumberland 7, 0, -336, 9½.

 

Bishop’s 100 Celebration

 

                Bishop Auckland Bowling Club celebrated its Centenary by hosting an invitation triples tournament to which all teams in the South West Durham and Darlington & District League were invited. There was an excellent response when 47 entries were received.

                The tournament was given a carnival atmosphere when the hosts adorned the pavilion and perimeter fencing with balloons and bunting in the Club’s two blues colours. The weather also made a positive contribution by providing perfect conditions for bowling.

                The winners were Margaret White, Marjorie Nelson and Enid Miller of the host Club, who wish to express their sincere thanks to the many local traders who supported the event and the Co-Operative Funeral Service, who sponsored the Bishops Centenary shirts.

 

Alice Donaghy Memorial

 

                The annual match between Durham City and Sherburn Village in memory of a keen bowls supporter, but non-player, was staged at Durham. After a very close match played in excellent conditions the teams were level and the result had to be decided on the most ends won. Durham City won by 38 to 34.

                Paul Tindall, the Sherburn Village Chairman, presented the memorial trophy to Malcolm Atkinson, the Durham City Chairman.

 

Darlington Ladies League

 

                Hundens completed their Championship victory by 7½ points after they only dropped one point at Barnard Castle in the final league match of the season.

                Hundens will host the Ripley Pairs tournament and the semi finals of the Team Knock Out, in which the draw is Barnard Castle v Woodland and North Park v Northallerton. The final will be played on Finals Day at Bedale on Thursday, 10 September.

Durham Midweek League

 

                Sherburn Village went into their home match against Houghton Dairy Lane as the league leaders but only managed to take two points. That result allowed Nevilles Cross, who only dropped two points at Belmont, to move up to share top spot. However both Houghton and Sherburn could land the title if the results in the postponed matches go their way.

                Hundens A have secured the Division A Championship, while Woodland A, in third place, host the leaders next week needing a 4-0 win to deny South Park A the runners up spot.

                The League Knock Out final was won by Spennymoor A, who beat Shildon Railway in a very close match.

                The Railway Athletic are the League Champions with Spennymoor A the runners-up after both achieved three points victories against Shildon Rail A and Shildon Town respectively. Barnard Castle B and Richmond are relegated.

                In the Second Division, Spennymoor B celebrated winning the title with a maximum home victory over Woodland B. The second promotion spot went to Woodland A, who defeated the visiting South Park Vets by the odd point.

Barningham Jack Tournament

 

                The Annual Tournament for the Barningham Jack was held at Bishop Auckland where, after a very successful day’s bowling the Shildon Railway team of M. Dent, D. Blood and D. Morrison emerged as the winners after they beat Hundens A (A. Cooper, S. Berry and A. Taylor) by eight shots to 5.

                In the semi finals Shildon Railway beat the Hundens B team (I. Prentice, T. Fairless and B. Hopkinson) by seven shots to six, whilst in the other semi final the Hundens A team beat Cramlington (C. Brown, B. Turnbull and D. Wilkinson) by eleven shots to three.

                The Bishop Auckland organisers send their thanks to everyone who participated to make the event another success story.
