Bishop Auckland St Mary’s

THE Under 14s had a magnificent result in the County Cup quarter-final against Wearside.

St Mary’s took the lead through Zak Holywell and looked like going through in normal time only for Wearside to equalise with the last kick of the game. Extra time followed with Carl Stout being fouled in the penalty area giving St Mary’s a penalty, with Stout taking it only for the keeper to make a tremendous save.

This made St Mary’s more determined and captain Stout latched on to a half cleared header to volley a superb goal into the top corner to take the team through to their second County Cup semi-final.

Sunderland & District Mill View Over 40s League

FROST caused havoc with the Saturday fixtures with more than half the fixtures falling foul of the weather.

Hartlepool Catholic Club survived the inclement conditions and were giving out early Christmas presents, gifting Ryhope Foresters five goals in a 6-1 defeat at Sunderland.

Three gifts in the first half were followed by another after the break before Catholic scored a lovely goal of their own. Keeper Richie Leonard threw out to Sammy Baldwin who played the ball up the line to Chris Tierney.

He played it inside to Robbie Wright who switched play with a great ball out to Allan Harll.

He crossed and Paul Hutchinson burst into the box to finish from close range. Unfortunately, Catholic still had another gift to dish out before Ryhope scored another with no help from the visitors. Wright was star man with Neil Macdonald also playing well.

Horden Sportsmans moved up to third place in Division Three with a comfortable 3-0 win at Trimdon Veterans.

They took the lead midway through the first half.

Jeff Robson got down the line and crossed to Billy Scott. He took the ball in with his back to goal, but turned his marker and shot low into the corner of the net.

They were dominating the play but half chances came and went, and they had to wait until 20 minutes after the break to double their lead.

It was Scott again on target, lobbing the advancing keeper after being put through by Lee Davis.

Five minutes later it was three, Gary Ferguson poking the ball home following a Micky Cole corner. Scott was star man, Robson, Davis and Daryl Burns also standing out.

Hartlepool Stag & Monkey picked up a good point away at Boldon Colliery Tavern in a very tight game that ended 1-1.

In a goalless first half Andy Copeman went close for Stag, whilst at the other end defender Mark Dobson cleared off the line and keeper Mark Dobson made a fine save.

There was only ten minutes left when Boldon went in front, Stag’s defence getting caught out by a ball over the top. They thought they’d hit straight back when Aiden Trimble found the net but he was controversially given offside.

With virtually the last kick of the game Stag got the equaliser they deserved. Jonathon Tones beat two men and his shot was saved but not gathered in, and he followed up to score. Darren Rowbotham starred, along with Nick Cain and Trevor Robinson.

In Division One Hartlepool Gillen Arms beat Milbourne Arms 3-1. They were quite poor during the first half but still led at the break courtesy of a good strike from Buster Bellwood. They improved as the game went on and doubled their lead after the hour mark, John Linighan hitting a 35-yard special. Milbourne responded with a good spell during which Geoff Bulley pulled off a good save before the deficit was reduced from the penalty spot. However, the comeback was short-lived as a fine individual goal from Graham Douglas sealed the points. Best for the winners were Mark Weatherall, Simon Blackett, Francis McGinty and Paul Lindsay.

The Division Three derby between Peterlee Helford and Wingate Cons Club ended in a 1-0 win for the home team. In a closely fought match the teams turned round at 0-0. The game began to open up and Peterlee broke the deadlock midway through the second period when Paul Purvis finished off a great four man move by firing in to the bottom corner from the edge of the box. Wingate pushed forward in search of an equaliser but when David Simpson burst through on to Kevin Taylor’s pass the home keeper pulled off a point blank save. Star men were Purvis for Peterlee and Simpson for Wingate.

In Division Four Hartlepool Vets acquitted themselves really well but lost 4-2 at Sedgefield Black Lion. They led 2-0 at the break but it could have been a lot more. Anthony Tweddle scored both goals, first putting away Peter Watson’s pass and then latching on to a ball over the top. Paul Reed, Gary Owen and Tommy Beach all went close to increasing the lead.

Sedgefield scored early in the second half to give themselves belief. A disputed penalty levelled the game, and a scrambled goal put them in front. The Vets responded with a Sammy Clarke header that went just wide, but a last minute goal wrapped things up for the home team.

Best for the Vets were Owen, Tweddle, Ian Mason, Ged Suggitt and Micky Din.
